Lutherkirche Leipzig

The Lutherkirche in Leipzig's Bachviertel, right at the edge of the picturesque Johannapark, is the second preaching venue of the Evangelical Lutheran parish of St. Thomas and an important place of living faith and vibrant culture.
The foundation stone of the neo-Gothic brick church was laid on 10 November 1883 on the 400th birthday of the reformer Martin Luther. Built to plans by the architect Julius Zeißig, it was consecrated in 1886. Today its tower, about 65 metres high with steep gables, shapes the skyline of western Leipzig. Inside, the richly decorated oak carving of the pulpit and a remarkable historic copy of Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper, painted by James Marshall for the chancel, stand out.
Since the reunification with the Thomas parish in 2002 the building has played a special dual role: as the spiritual centre of the forum thomanum education campus, the Lutherkirche bridges the centuries-old tradition of the Thomanerchor and modern parish work. Besides regular services, its atmospheric acoustics make it a valued setting for concerts and cultural events.
