Experience ENLIGHTENMENT, the immersive light show that turns the Kulturkirche Paulus in Basel into a stage of light and sound.
ENLIGHTENMENT turns the Kulturkirche Paulus in Basel into a living space of light, colour, movement and sound. Monumental projections merge with the architecture of a striking sacred building from around 1900.
Light, music and architecture enter into a dialogue: coloured stained glass, ornamental mosaics and the impressive sense of space become part of the staging themselves.
You walk into the church, look up and let go. No guided tour, no assigned seating, no right or wrong spot. Take a seat on a pew, a chair or a floor cushion and find your own way into what is happening above you.
At its heart is a newly arranged and re-recorded version of Antonio Vivaldi's Four Seasons, exclusively produced for ENLIGHTENMENT. Under the artistic direction of Silvio Buchmeier, the work was recorded anew.
The result is a living interplay of music, light and architecture that fills the space completely and speaks to every sense.
The Venue
The Kulturkirche Paulus in Basel is one of the striking sacred buildings of the turn of the 20th century. Built between 1898 and 1901 to plans by Curjel & Moser, it combines Neo-Romanesque architecture with decorative Art Nouveau elements. Particularly distinctive are the prominent tower, the large rose window and the artfully designed façades. Inside, coloured stained glass, ornamental mosaics and an impressive sense of space shape the overall architectural picture. Since 2021 the former Pauluskirche has been used as a cultural church, combining historic ambience with a varied programme of concerts and cultural events. The interplay of historic architecture and contemporary use makes it a special location in Basel.
